The path to self-employment is another career option that is open to scientists and researchers of all disciplines and can be an interesting alternative for postdocs. One possibility are the so-called science spin-offs; this refers to the establishment of companies in which research results - sometimes even tangible products - are commercially marketed.
However, start-up ideas that are located in the service sector can also lead to the establishment of a company.

Advice and support for Exist applications is also offered via JGU Startup Center.
JGU and the Mainz University of Applied Sciences offer researchers advice and information in a cross-university ‘founding office’, the Gründungsbüro Mainz. In addition, there are various regional and supra-regional contact points and support programmes which provide both content-related and financial support to those wishing to set up their own business in.
