Information: Entrepreneurship and Start-ups

The path to self-employment is another career option that is open to scientists and researchers of all disciplines and can be an interesting alternative for postdocs. One possibility are the so-called science spin-offs; this refers to the establishment of companies in which research results - sometimes even tangible products - are commercially marketed.

However, start-up ideas that are located in the service sector can also lead to the establishment of a company.

JGU's Research and Technology Transfer unit (Stabstelle Forschung und Technologietransfer) offers advice to members of the JGU who wish to pursue a start-up project based on results or ideas generated within the framework of research activities (e.g. master's thesis, doctoral thesis). Advice and support for Exist applications is also offered via JGU Startup Center.

JGU and the Mainz University of Applied Sciences offer researchers advice and information in a cross-university ‘founding office’, the Gründungsbüro Mainz. In addition, there are various regional and supra-regional contact points and support programmes which provide both content-related and financial support to those wishing to set up their own business in.
